RCC dams are now being constructed all over the world in many countries including USA, Spain, China and Japan, with Spain as one of the leading countries today. It is understood that there exist more than 150 dams of this type in service or under construction. In India, a successful beginning in adoption of this state of the art technique of RCC has been made in the construction of three dams of the Ghatghar Project, which were completed by the end of 2006 and now the Middle Vaitarna Dam, 105 m high, water supply project is under construction. While constructing these dams at Ghatghar, the project authorities had to face many challenges during the early stages of the learning curve. The experience gained by the Project Engineers of Ghatghar Project, Maharashtra State would therefore be of immense use to the organization in India going in for adoption of this technology in the near future. It is learnt that some project authorities are at an advanced stage for considering RCC Dams for their projects.
There appears a need to create awareness about this new technology among engineers of the concerned agencies in India on different aspects including planning, design, construction, equipment, cost aspects, O&M etc. especially highlighting the scope for utilization of bulk quantity of fly ash being produced annually in thermal power stations in the country.
In view the above, the Indian Committee on Large Dams (INCOLD), CBIP, Water resources Department, Govt. of Maharashtra propose to organize a Seminar on Roller Compacted Concrete Dams on 13-14th April 2011 at Nashik, Maharashtra followed by one day field visit on 15th April 2011 to the project site to view the progress of construction of lower dam at Middle Vaitarna 105 m high (Water Supply project) . At the seminar we expect presentations from national and international experts who are involved in the planning, design, construction and operation & maintenance of RCC dams, about their experiences and exchange of information on the latest state-of-the-art technology.
DIRK India has been providing 117.000 mt of POZZOCRETE 40 to the Ghatghar Dams and is currently again the exclusive supplier to the Middle Vaitarna Dam which will consume around 210.000 mt of POZZOCRETE 40.
