The Dirk India Fly Ash recycling technology was presented on a trade mission to Vietnam organized by the UK Environmental Industries Sector Unit (EISU) in cooperation with the UK embassy in Hanoi and the Consul General in HCMC. Saigon Times stated: "Georg Dirk, director of the DIRK Group of Companies said that fly ash from coal fired power stations could be an asset and could bring about high economic benefit if people would know how to apply it to concrete production.
In 2006 Vietnam consumed some 35 million tons of cement, and 35% of this cement can be replaced by Fly Ash. This will result in savings of some US$ 60 million a year for Vietnam's construction and state infrastructure. He said: Vietnam power plants produce some 12 million tons of Fly Ash a year. and this shows Vietnam's big potential for the fly ash cement industry."
In the deliberations at the seminar it was understood that Vietnam's fly ash will need carbon extraction and classification to make it usable in concrete and avoid landfilling of fly ash which is the currently dominant disposal method.
DIRK Group would be interested to invest in such technology, if the legal framework to use Fly Ash in concrete would be established similar to legislation in India and most parts of the developed world. As a starting point the import of Fly Ash for a number of demonstration projects should be permitted to establish confidence in processed fly ash as a secure and beneficial construction material.
