On 23rd to 25th of February 2007 around 180 delegates attended this important conference to discuss the ways to further improve beneficial use of power station ashes, mainly Fly Ashes. Dr. A.K. Chatterjee, President of the Coal Ash Institute of India, concluded that the growth of coal consumption in the Asia Pacific region with 38% from 1985-2005 can not be matched by any other world region with its direct effect on Fly Ash production.
Speakers from the Power Sector, the Cement Industry, Research Institutes and Governmental Organisations presented their view how the region, but especially India, would deal with the increase of available Fly Ash from currently 140 m tons/year to 200 m tons/year by 2012.
Georg Dirk, chairman of Dirk Group, contributed some controversial views on the future processing of Fly Ash in India. His title : "Fly Ash in concrete: Inter-ground or inter-blended?" formed the discussion base of who would mostly profit from either the production of inter-ground PPC or inter-blended OPC and Fly Ash at the construction site.
He also focused on the quality aspects of the two application routes for Fly Ash in concrete, pointing out that one very important feature when using Fly Ash in concrete - the water cement ratio - [ a main contributing factor to concrete durability] could only be fully enjoyed going the inter-blend way.
