Fifoots Power Station is one of several power stations which has been retro-fitted with Flu Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) to remove the oxides of sulphur from the flu gases. Fifoots is different to other FGD technologies in so much as a solution of hydrated lime is injected upstream of the bag filters, this results in a change of PFA quality. The Dirk Group is working to find new uses for this material.
The FBA is of normal quality and is being supplied by DIRK in the main to Tarmac's Topblock factory at Hilton Main which is the largest block plant in the UK, who collect it from the power station and stock pile it, in readiness for being screened for use in the manufacture of lightweight thermal blocks, which are used for the construction walls in houses etc.
