World Environment Day is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all year round and climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere. On this years environment day Mr. Georg Dirk will highlight the Nashik water issue whilst speaking to the Institution of Engineers (India) Nashik Local Center.
Why bother about current drought scenario, the monsoon is approaching soon?
Nashik District will have to provide in future 3.7 cr liters of water a day for the existing, under construction and planned power generation facilities in Nashik District. This figure does not take in to account water needed to form fly ash slurries for wet fly ash disposal. The impact on Nashik's environment and population will be immense.
If properly planned and in cooperation with the power generators any water consumption for ash disposal can be avoided. Legislation provides for this, but the factual situation is quite different
"Can we afford this"
a DVD available to the Institution of Engineers and people in the audience gives insight in today’s situation regarding the ash disposal from Nashik Thermal Power Station. Shortly 2580 MW/h of electricity will be generated in Nashik. Each MW/h requires in India around 6000 liters of water. This year’s hot season is nearly over but the problem will start to escalate already in 2014. The plan how to divide the water resource should be a public document.
Electricity is needed to fuel industrial growth…..avoidable water wastage is not affordable.
