DIRK proposes community project using fly ash for quary reclamation

October 01, 2007

There are a large number of finished quarry operations in the Nashik District. The Nashik District Collector and a high ranking team of the Maharashtra Pollution Board, Mining Department, Conservator of Forests, Groundwater and Sewerage, Public Works, Housing- and Labour Department, visited the Nashik POZZOCRETE plant to discuss a proposal made by Georg Dirk to start a demonstration project for recultivation of a depleted quarry in the Nashik District.

The Hon. Nashik District Collector Mr. Chokalingum welcomed the proposal especially as it is not directly related to assist a specific company, but the community in general. As such a project has not been done so far in Nasik District and projects in other parts of India, although successful, left some questions unanswered, Mr.Chokalingum insisted that proper research on the specific site has to be carried out to the satisfaction of the agencies who will have to grant permission for such project.

Georg Dirk emphasized that Dirk India is prepared to bear the cost for research and execution of the project as part of their corporate environmental responsibility. He said: It makes more sense to use Fly Ash for recultivation of old quarry holes than to increase the 37 million tons of Ash already dumped in the Nashik Ash lagoon of MAHAGENCO at Eklahare Power Station.
