AMBUJA CEMENT Ltd acquires a 60% stake in DIRK India

AMBUJA CEMENT LIMITED acquired 60% of the equity shares in DIRK India Private Ltd from its promoters. Chairman of the new established Board of DIRK India remains to be Mr. Georg Dirk. The change in the shareholding leaves the existing experienced teams of employees in areas of operations, technical and commercial untouched. DIRK India will continue to produce POZZOCRETE by processing Fly Ash from coal fired power stations.

Making this announcement today, Mr. Georg Dirk, the promoter of Dirk India said, "The brand AMBUJA Cements enjoys a reputation of a leader in quality cements.

Ambuja Cements Ltd. (ACL) is one of the leading cement manufacturing companies in India. It commenced cement production in 1986.The Company was initially called Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd which later became Ambuja Cements Ltd. The global cement major Holcim acquired management control of ACL in 2006. Holcim today holds little over 46% equity in ACL.

ACL has grown over ten folds over the past decade. Its current cement capacity is little over 25 million tonnes and has plans to augment it further. The Company has 5 integrated cement manufacturing plants and 8 cement grinding units across the country. ACL enjoys a reputation of being one of the most efficient cement manufacturers in the world. With environment protection measures on par with the finest in the country, ACL is one of the most profitable and innovative cement companies in India. ACL is the first Indian cement manufacturer to build a captive port with four terminals along the country’s western  coastline to facilitate timely, cost effective and environmentally cleaner shipments of bulk cement to its customers. The Company has its own fleet of ships. ACL has also pioneered the development of the multiple bio-mass co-fired technology for generating greener power in its captive plants.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), India, became the Nobel Peace Prize laureate together with the former American Vice President Al Gore for laying foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract climate changes. This panel in collaboration with TERI (Tata Energy and Resources Institute) issued in 2006 a book containing 25 best projects for corporate environmental responsibility in India - the DIRK Pozzocrete plant at Nashik was selected as one of those twenty five project.
