China and India collaborate on fly ash issues

With this background both countries are looking for beneficial applications of this power station waste. Mr. G. Dirk, chairman of DIRK India Private Ltd. presented his paper: "10 years of fly ash recycling at Nashik Thermal Power Station" and acted as chairman of the concrete session,

The conference touched on all issues related to the improvement of increasing the volume of fly ash to be recycled into concrete. Mr. G. Dirk was chairing the session with prominent speakers like Dr. P.C. Basu (Director Civil and Structural Engineering ,AERB . Mumbai), Dr. N.N. Som (former Professor of Civil Engineering of Jadavpur University, Kolkata), Mr. He Fu An (President, Committee of Nanjing Fly Ash Recycling Society, China), Prof. S. Saraswati, (Professor Construction and Engineering Departnment , Jadavpur University, Kolkata) and Mr. Kollol Basu (CEO of LYTAG, India).

In the lively discussion which followed the presentations it was marked again that trading of unprocessed fly ash is a threat to the industry. Mr. Dirk raised the controversial issue of comparing PPC with OPC/Fly Ash blends and the economical aspects of this. The plenum requested the Coal Ash Institute to lobby inside the Bureau of Indian Standards to have the permitted maximum Fly Ash/ OPC replacement rate of currently 35% increased to 40 or 45 %.

Mr. Dirk thanked the president of the Coal Ash Institute of India, Dr. A.K.Chatterjee, to make this valuable event possible.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), India, became the Nobel Peace Prize laureate together with the former American Vice President Al Gore for laying foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract climate changes. This panel in collaboration with TERI (Tata Energy and Resources Institute) issued in 2006 a book containing 25 best projects for corporate environmental responsibility in India - the DIRK Pozzocrete plant at Nashik was selected as one of those twenty five project.
